2. Chicken Rice

A little knowledge

A common dish in Singapore is by no doubt the Hainanese chicken rice. It was invented by the immigrants from Hainan in China and this dish is a hit in Singapore.

Hainanese chicken rice consists of rice cooked in chicken stock (sometimes called "oily rice,") served with either steamed or roast chicken. The remaining chicken stock not used to cook the rice is often used to make soup. This makes the soup appetizing. Serving is usually rice and chicken served with sliced cucumber, pounded ginger, and a tangy chilli sauce mixed with garlic.

Chicken Rice everywhere!

Chicken rice here, there and everywhere! It is a popular dish among Singaporeans here and the tourists that come to Singapore. Even straw polls conducted have consistently seen the dish topping the charts when members of the public gave chicken rice as an answer to their favourite dish. The dish was served at international expositions and numerous other global events abroad, and in restaurants run by Singapore overseas, Hainanese chicken rice is one of the few dishes that is being served on Singapore Airlines as a representation of Singaporean cuisine.

At almost all local food outlets and food courts in Singapore, one can spot at least one stall selling chicken rice. Some bigger chains include Five Star Hainanese Chicken Rice which has many stalls islandwide. One of the most famous Hainanese chicken rice dishes is served at a cafe called "The Chatterbox" at the 5-star Meritus Mandarin Hotel, in Orchard Road, Singapore. This dish has won many national cuisine awards for the hotel. To give an idea of how the dish looks like when it is served, picture this in your mind: a large circular wooden tray, on it is a plate of steamed or roast chicken, a bowl of rice, a bowl of chicken soup, and three small dishes of chilli, soy sauce and ginger sauce. Similarly like other people, the rice is prepared with chicken stock but the hotel has added in a special pack of garlic-based ingredients. The soy sauce is also specially prepared by the head chef and it is said to be a closely guarded secret.

Facts

Surprisingly, hainanese chicken rice is prevalent in many Asia countries but not in Hainan itself!
